Term 1 – Week 10 – 4 April 2019

4 April  –  Term 1  – Week 10

Tēnā koutou e aku rangatira,

The cooler weather this morning is a clear reminder that fall is well upon us.  Though a bit brisk, the lovely fall weather has been an inspiration for our Junior and Senior teams.  This week, Whāea Ashton’s class have been investigating photosynthesis and learning how Tama-Nui-Te-Rā powers the carbon cycle around the globe.  Meanwhile, our Junior classes have been taking advantage of all the new fallen leaves to develop some beautiful and innovative creations.  No matter the weather, Allandale kids are the Learning Kind!

GUMBOOT FRIDAY

Tomorrow (April 5th), Mike King’s “I Am Hope” foundation is launching Gumboot Friday to raise awareness about young people living with depression.   Allandale staff and students are invited to participate by wearing your gumboots to school!   Please note that this is not a mufti day, nor is it a fundraiser.  Regular school uniform is expected, and no gold coins will be collected.

DISCO!

Allandale School will be hosting our first disco of the year next Thursday (April 11th) in our school hall!

So put on your dancing shoes and come on down, tamariki ma!

Juniors – Years 1-3 from 4pm to 5pm

Seniors – Years 4-6 from 5pm to 6.30pm

Admission by Gold coin

Pre-order American Hotdogs at the school office for $3.

There will be glo sticks, smoothies and lollies for sale on the night.

BIBLE IN SCHOOLS

As mentioned last week, the Board of Trustees of Allandale School has decided to move to an “opt-in” system for the Bible In Schools programme as recommended by the Ministry of Education.

Included in last week’s newsletter was a permission slip for parents, caregivers and whānau.  If you would like your Year 5/6 child to participate in Bible In Schools when it resumes next Term, please complete this permission form and return it to the school.  New enrolments to the school will be able to give permission at the time of enrolment.

Bible In Schools is set to resume on Thursday mornings from 9:00-9:30am for our Year 5/6 classes on May 2nd.  Parents, caregivers and whānau are reminded of your right to opt into or out of this programme at any time by providing written notice to the school.  Class programmes continue as normal for all students whose families choose to opt out.

If you would like further information about the Bible In Schools programme, you are invited to contact the school or come out to one of the Thursday morning sessions!

BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTION

With the 2019 Board of Trustees election in May of this year, all members of our community are encouraged to “make a difference for our school” and become a trustee.  Trustees are active leaders in our school and we need more people willing to use their skills and experiences for the benefit of our tamariki. Trustees have an important role supporting strong professional leadership and effective teaching for all students through informed governance.  If you are interested in putting your name forward for the 2019 Board of Trustees election, I encourage you to go to www.nzsta.org.nz for more information and to watch for School Trustee Election notices over the next few weeks.

LIBRARY BOOKS

Last year, Allandale School lost more than $5000 worth of books from our school library.  In an effort to ensure that our funding can be better used for the education of our tamariki, we are asking all Allandale families to please have a look and see if you have any of our books around your house and bring them back to school.  There is no penalty for the late return of our library books, and they should all be well-marked as belonging to the school.  If you aren’t sure whether or not your child has an overdue book checked out, please contact the school, or look for a note from Mrs. Searle our librarian. Thank you!

ALLANDALE FRONT GATE

Just a reminder that the chain on the driveway is up from 8:15 to 8:45am, and from 2:40 to 3:00pm each day.  The chain is up to prevent all vehicles from moving through the parking lot while our tamariki are travelling to and from school, and it will not be opened under any circumstances during these times.   This procedure has been established for the safety of our children, and all staff, whānau, external agencies, contractors, and visitors to the school are expected to comply.  Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

MIDDLE CAMP FEES ARE DUE NOW

We only have a little over a week left of this term and our camp is in the first week of Term 2 so please get your camp fees paid as soon as possible.

Teachers also need the medical and emergency contact information sent back to school as soon as possible so we can make the necessary adjustments to our camp menu or sleeping/car arrangements.

SPORTS REPORT

SPORTS SHIRTS HAVE ARRIVED!!  They look fantastic so please see the office staff for your purchase. $18.00 each.

Please note: if your child is playing soccer in the 5th, 6th, and 7th grades you DO NOT need to purchase a shirt as the Allandale soccer club has some for you to use.  8th and 9th grade players WILL need to buy one.

There is a SOCCER MUSTER for 5th 6th and 7th grade tonight (Thursday April 4th) on the Allandale school fields from 2.45pm – 3.45pm.

BAY DAY is a fun day of football which takes place at Rex Morpeth Park and Athletics fields on the first Saturday after the school holidays (May 4th). We will begin training in the first week back to school if your coach doesn’t start you earlier!

HOCKEY MUSTER will be on next Wednesday 10 April at lunchtime. Notices will be sent out about this early next week. Training will start in the first week of next term and games will begin on May 4th (the first weekend after holidays). You will need to purchase a school sports top to play.

BASKETBALLERS need to get your fees paid and forms in to the office by tomorrow (Friday, April 5th) as we need to put teams in. Parents and Caregivers are asked to please put your name down to help, or our children will not be able to play. Thanks for your support.

Unfortunately, the EBOP SOFTBALL competition was cancelled due to a lack of entries from other schools so our two Allandale teams will play against each other tomorrow (Friday, April 5th) here at school. Good luck everyone!

The KI-O-RAHI competition is due to take place in Opotiki on the last day of term (April 12th), however at this stage we do not have enough transportation for this event.  Please see Ms G or text her on 0272908219 if you can help!
