Term 4 – Week 5 – 14 November 2019

14 November 2019 –  Term 4  –  Week 5

Tēnā koutou e aku Rangatira,

As the weather continues to warm up, we have now reached the mid-point of our final Term of 2019!  As always, the students and staff of Allandale School continue to work hard to ensure that these next few weeks are engaging and productive.  Before we know it the end of the school year will be upon us!

Kia tau te rangimarie,

Drew Manning

Principal

STUDY LEAVE

As you may be aware, the Ministry of Education has awarded our Principal, Drew Manning, a study leave scholarship for 32 weeks next year.  Mr. Manning will be undertaking distance learning to complete his Master’s degree in Education.  From March 2nd to November 22nd, 2020, he will be visiting schools and researching best practice implementation of Learning Through Play, MakerSpaces, and Inquiry and Project Based Learning.  It is his intention to return to Allandale School equipped with the skills and knowledge required to get the very best out of the wonderful new Taiao assets, our engaging curriculum, and our amazing kids!

In his absence, The Board of Trustees of Allandale School would like to announce the appointment of Adrianne McAllister as Acting Principal during Mr. Manning’s absence.  The Board has discussed this appointment at length, and through a rigorous process of due diligence is confident that Mrs. McAllister is the right choice for this role.  Under her leadership the mission and vision of Allandale will remain at the forefront, and our kura will continue to work to fulfill these aspirations.

Empowering Journeys – Successful Futures

He Ara Whakanui – Kia Pakari Ai

Allandale School will be a school where all are healthy in mind, body and spirit; are proud of who they are and where they come from; and are able to fulfil their individual potential.

Te Kura o Motueka, he kura ka kitea te oranga o te hinengaro, te tinana, me te wairua hoki; he miharo te mohio i ahu mai rātau i hea, ka eke hoki ngā wawata.

As always, you are reminded of a standing invitation to contact the Board with your questions or feedback directly at any time through our dedicated email address – boardoftrustees@allandale.school.nz.

TRANSITION TO WHAKATĀNE INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

Here are some important dates for our students and their families transitioning to Whakatāne Intermediate School in 2020:

Tuesday, 26 November:  Year 6 Parents Evening at WIS (6:30-8:00pm)

Wednesday, 27 November:  Year 6 students visit for Orientation Day (9:30am)

FREE EPIPENS

Thanks to FundaPen – a ground-breaking collaboration between Allergy New Zealand and Pub Charity – from Monday 11 November, 2,500 free EpiPen auto-injectors will be available to young people who have a doctor-diagnosed allergy and are at risk of anaphylaxis.

To obtain one of the free EpiPen auto injectors, whānau will need to visit their family doctor.

SUNSMART

With spring upon us, this is just a reminder that all students are required to have a navy blue bucket hat or baseball cap at school at all times.

These hats may have an Allandale School logo on them, but no other colours or logos will be permitted.  Students are now expected to have acceptable hats with them throughout Terms 1 and 4, and will not be permitted to wear hats that do not match the uniform.  If students do not have acceptable hats, they will be directed to the shaded areas, where they will remain until the end of play time.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES NOTICES

MEET THE BOARD

Earlier this year, a new Board of Trustees for Allandale School was elected.  With a few meetings under their belts, the new Board would like to take the opportunity to introduce themselves over the next few weeks.  They would also like to remind the Allandale community that they welcome questions, feedback, or ideas of any kind.  Everyone is encouraged to contact the Board through the school office, or directly by email at boardoftrustees@allandale.school.nz.

GREG HARVEY

Through injury, I became a stay-at-home dad.  I am currently contributing to Allandale School through the Board of Trustees, volunteering to run our Breakfast Club, helping with Friday sausage sizzles, and supporting my children’s classes with their events and activities.

EMILY RAMPLING

I have had a very diverse range of employment over the past 20 years, however the main industries I have focused on in the past 15 years are Banking and Finance, and I offer those skills and experience to my role on the Board. I enjoy my role on the Board as it allows me to contribute to the decision-making that impacts the school.  I am married to Colin, and we have two children at Allandale, Harry and Lucy, and we are avid supporters of the school’s affirmation of cultural diversity.

SCHOOL DONATIONS

As you may be aware, the Ministry of Education has decided to offer schools the opportunity to accept increased funding if they agree to eliminate school donations.  The Board of Trustees of Allandale School has decided to accept the Ministry’s offer and will not be asking for donations from our whānau effective next year.  More information on this school donation scheme can be found at https://www.education.govt.nz/school/funding-and-financials/fees-charges-and-donations/.

YEAR 1 AND 2 FARM TRIP

Last Wednesday the year 1 and 2 team were lucky enough to visit two dairy farms on Te Rahu Road.

We had a great day. Big thank you to Scottie McLeod, Gerard van Beek, Greg from Fonterra, Kylie and Dane Wilson, Karen and Troy Doherty for allowing us to visit and giving us their time. The children were able to see butter being made the old-fashioned way. They saw cows up close and watched milking.

Some lucky children were even able to sit in the driver’s seat of the milk tanker.  Some highlights were watching the calves being fed and enjoying a free flavoured milk from Fonterra.

Thanks also to the parent helpers for their support.
