21 February 2019 – Term 4 – Week 4

Tēnā koutou e aku rangatira,

Once again, welcome back to another exciting year at Allandale School!  We have had a strong start to the year, as everyone adapts smoothly to the routines and challenges of school life.  We are really looking forward to a positive year for all of our children, as well as the staff and Allandale community!

MEET THE STAFF BBQ POSTPONED

Despite the welcome watering for our new gardens, it would have been nice if the rain had held off for just one more day!

Even if the rain stops, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be picnic weather this evening, so Allandale’s Meet the Staff BBQ has been postponed to next Thursday (Feb. 28th) starting at 5:30pm. Our new BBQs in the Community Garden will be available to cook your food, and we will have games and swimming. This is an important opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, and to get to know the rest of the Allandale community. All are encouraged to attend!

NIHAU AND WELCOME!

For the past few years, Allandale School has hosted a Mandarin Language tutor from China to share Mandarin language lessons with our Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 students.  This year we welcome Yunzhe (Iris) Wang from Beijing.  Yunzhe is working hard to learn everything she can about our beautiful country while she is here.  We are very pleased that she has chosen to join us!

This week also saw another new staff member join Allandale School’s team!  We are pleased to welcome our new gardener, Shona Ferguson.  Whāea Shona is an experienced horticulturalist, who brings a wealth of skills and initiative to Allandale’s new Taiao spaces.  The kura’s staff and students are looking forward to working with her throughout the year as our beautiful gardens become even more amazing!

ALLANDALE GRADUATES

Allandale School is proud to recognise some of our graduates who have just been named as Prefects at Whakatāne High School.  Congratulations to Erena van der Aa (Prefect), Jean-Daniel Rosset (Deputy Head Boy), and Surbjit Singh (Prefect) on their appointments to these important roles.

Congratulations also go out to a number of Allandale graduates who have been appointed to class leadership roles at Whakatāne Intermediate School.

It is always heartening to see Allandale students continuing to be recognised as leaders after they leave us.  Kia kaha, kia ū, kia maia i o koutou mahi!

QUESTIONS, CONCERNS, AND FEEDBACK

Please let the school know as soon as possible if you have any questions or concerns. We are committed to ensuring that all of our students, staff, and whānau are safe and happy in our school environment, so please keep the lines of communication open. You are encouraged to contact Teachers, Team Leaders, Deputy Principals, or the Principal so that we can work together.

In addition, the Board of Trustees is always open to feedback from our community.  Whānau are invited to email the Board at BOT@allandale.school.nz, or drop off written feedback to the school Office.

BIBLE IN SCHOOLS

Allandale School is one of many schools in the Eastern Bay that host the Bible In Schools programme for our Year 5 and 6 students.  The focus of this programme is to reinforce school and community values through Christian Bible stories.

Bible in Schools is set to resume on Thursday mornings from 9:00-9:30am for our Year 5/6 classes on March 14th.  Parents, caregivers and whānau are reminded of your right to opt out of this programme at any time by providing written notice to the school.  Class programmes continue as normal for all students whose families choose to opt out.

If you would like further information about the Bible In Schools programme, you are invited to contact the school or come out to one of the Thursday morning sessions!

TOYS AND VALUABLES

Parents and caregivers are reminded that the Board of Trustees and Staff of Allandale School accept no responsibility in the case of loss or damage to toys, valuables or other personal articles brought to school.  While all reasonable care is taken and efforts are made to find lost property, the responsibility rests with the owner.  The school is well-equipped with toys, games, and sports gear, and we ask that personal valuables remain at home.  Many are alike, they are often unnamed, can be easily lost, and present a distraction to other students.  Thank you for your co-operation.
