“Rere atu kia whakairohia to ake ao”
‘Fly off and carve your own future’ is our whakatauākī which is illustrated in the carvings of our waharoa.
Our goal is for our tamariki to achieve their full potential and leave our school as fully-fledged manu, ready to ‘fly’ with strong flight feather and kete full of matauranga (knowledge).
We are committed to meeting the diverse learning needs of our children. We have approximately 330 students in 15 classrooms, including three bilingual classes ranging from Year 1 – Year 6.
We have clear expectations about learning, and understand that learning looks different for different learners. We believe in ‘ako’: reciprocal teaching and learning. Our approach and programmes are guided by research.
Parents and whānau are always welcome and encouraged to participate in their child’s learning and experiences at our kura.
Our vision
To mātou tūruapō
Our vision is that Allandale graduates are healthy young people, competent and confident in their identity, with the cultural, social and academic mātauranga and love of learning to achieve their aspirations and contribute to their communities.
Our mission
To mātou whakatakanga
Our school’s mission supports the achievement of our vision:
Powerful, engaging and reciprocal learning relationships
Intentional, professional leadership
A positive, inclusive, healthy, cultural, social academic and physical climate for learning
Excellence in teaching and learning
Our values
Ō mātou uara
Our school values are like harakeke being woven together – they are central to everything we do at Allandale. They guide our practices, interactions and decision-making processes to create the environment in which our learners are nurtured and supported so they may spread their wings and fly off to carve their own futures.
Whānaungatanga
speaks of belonging, connection and relationships.
We foster whānaungatanga through shared experiences and working together. This builds our sense of belonging and connection to one another, with an understanding of ourselves as central to the connections and relationships.
Manaakitanga
speaks of respect, service, inclusivity and an ethic of care.
We value, honour and respect one another’s mana through our interactions by treating each other with kindness and care. Extending manaakitanga to others also lifts our own mana and that of the groups’ in which we belong.
Kaitiakitanga
speaks of responsibility and guardianship for the wider world - past, present and future.
We are kaitiaki. It is our responsibility to protect, care for and sustain the treasures of our world, through the passing on, sharing and engagement of knowledge, understanding and active practice.
Our beliefs
Ō mātou whanonga pono
Balanced Teaching and Learning Programmes
In all our classrooms, our programmes are made up of deliberate teaching acts, deliberate independent practice activities, collaborative group tasks and social skills teaching.
Student Ownership
Our tauira are empowered to make decisions about their own learning, set goals and collaboratively implement action plans to achieve their goals and realise their dreams. Student voice informs our teaching and learning.
Ako
Everyone is an ongoing learner at Allandale. The roles between teacher and student and interchangeable, with teachers demonstrating life-long learning practices and students demonstrating leadership in areas of strengths.
Connected, Holistic and Rich Curriculum Delivery
Our Allandale curriculum and rich learning experiences are centered around key narratives from Ngāti Awa and connect with themes and contexts that can be explored at regional, national and global levels.
Assessment Practices
Self-assessment, peer assessment and formative assessments are integral parts of our teaching and learning programmes. To ensure teaching remains relevant and purposeful, we collect formative assessments in a range of ways which are used to inform our next teaching and learning steps.
Diagnostic and summative assessments are used intermittently to validate and support formative assessment information.
Conducive Classroom Culture
All classrooms at Allandale School are safe, conducive learning environments, where all members of the classroom are valued, respected and supported to be the best versions of themselves.
Celebration and Evidence of Learning
Our physical classroom spaces, modelling books and student workbooks celebrate and evidence learning to the highest quality, showing we take pride in our teaching and learning. Our classroom walls are like a third-teacher in the room, displaying models of success, exemplars, student trackers as well as celebrations of students' work.
