School Newsletter: Week 4, Term 2 2021
Tēnā koutou e āku rangatira
We hope you are all settling into the cooler months and that your tamariki are happy and settled at school.
A big thank you to all those that fed their thoughts into the process for the permanent principal appointment either by coming along to one of our engagement hui, completing the online survey, or feeding your thoughts to one of our trustees.
A summary of feedback provided by tamariki, staff, whānau and our hāpori was provided to all candidates and was used as an essential part of the appointment criteria. The feedback painted a great picture for our candidates of who we are as a school and what our aspirations are. It will also be used to help steer the direction of our school for the future.
The appointment of a principal is the most important job a Board will undertake in any school and our Board takes this responsibility very seriously. To ensure that the decision would be as robust as possible, the Appointment Panel was made up of both school trustees as well as representatives of mana whenua and members of our community.
We are very grateful to our esteemed manuhiri who joined with the Board to form the Appointment Panel: Matua Charlie Bluett (Ngāti Awa), Dr. Ngahuia Murphy (parent and Ngāti Manawa Kaupapa Māori researcher), Dr Leny Woolsey (former trustee and leadership specialist), Abraham Larsen (community, public health and HR practitioner), and Martyn Knapton (principal, Whakatāne High School).
Our Panel was expertly supported by our Kaiāwhina, Maurice Rehu, principal of Irongate Primary School in Hawkes Bay, member of Te Akatea New Zealand Māori Principals Association Executive and past President of The Hawke's Bay Primary Principals Association. Maurice expertly supported robust co-design, discussions and decision-making through each stage of the process.
The Panel worked together initially to co-design the process and short-list candidates, and on Saturday we met with short-listed candidates to interview them. Candidates interviewed were all very impressive and each had a lot to potentially offer to the position.
The Panel is now in the process of following up post-interviews and we hope to be able to come back to you all with an appointment decision early next week.
Our Board is very grateful to our manuhiri and Kaiāwhina for the time, energy and aroha they have each put into our school through this process.
Ngā manaakitanga,
Te Pōari o Te Kura o Motueka
