School Newsletter: Week 7, Term 1, 2021
“Rere atu kia whakairohia to ake ao”
This korero, which is illustrated in the carvings of our waharoa, reflects our intention as a school - nurturing learners so that upon leaving Allandale, they are ready to fly off and carve their own futures.
Tēnā koutou ngā whānau o Te Kura o Motueka/Allandale School.
We have heard from whānau that our communication around school events and celebrations could be better and to help with this we have upgraded our website. This has been a year in the making and has heavily relied on the amazing talents of Claire House from Claire House Photography. The energy and aroha that has gone into developing our website really showcases our school.
Over the next few weeks, we will be introducing areas within our website but I do encourage you to visit the site.
ALLANDALE SCHOOL website allandale.school.nz
Our School Page -- This is the page where you can view all information that is held within this tab. It has information about our school, key dates and times, the Acting Principal’s message, Our Approach for teaching and learning, our Strategic Plan, more detail about the programmes we run, all our policies, how we connect to Ngati Awa in our everyday teaching and learning programmes, annual reports and how people can join our team.
Water - Lakes, Beaches, Rivers
Water skills, water safety and swimming are important skills to foster in our tamariki especially because we are surrounded by water in Whakatane. We recognise this and have had the tamariki learning water safety and water skills, with Water Skills for Life this term.
Last week we also had our senior and middle school swimming sports. All our tamariki who participated in this had a ball. It was amazing to watch all our students being challenged and achieving their personal goals.
Ohope Beach trip
Our junior team enjoyed learning at Ohope Beach last week also. Exploring our beach through the living world allows students the opportunity to learn within our community. We know that all students learn better when they have real-life experiences and real-life situations.
Thank you to all our staff, students and whānau who made these experiences possible.
Winter sports:
This year Allandale Staff are doing things a bit differently. Each staff member has a Contribution to School Life, something they do to support the smooth running of the school.
This year Whaea Te Rumate, Mrs Foster and Mrs McAllister are helping Whaea Hailey with winter sports.
Netball
Whaea Te Rumate with the help of Whaea Hailey are leading our Netball. We currently have 5 teams playing Netball this year.
Hockey
Mrs Foster is leading hockey. If your child would like to play Hockey this year they have 3 weeks left to get their registration forms in. We also need coaches for 3 more teams, so if you're available to help please get in contact with Kayley Foster via email at kayleyf@allandale.school.nz
Thank you to those who have paid fees and registered already.
Football
Mrs McAllister with the help of Max MacKay is leading Football. We are also currently accepting registrations via Facebook or through the office.
Allandale wants as many students as we can get playing winter sports and being active. If there is any reason your child/children would like to play winter sports and cannot please contact the school and we will try to support this to happen.
Whānau Feedback on Reports
We are currently reviewing our report format and would like to get your opinion.
Which format from last year do you find gives you the information you value.
Please contact the school with your feedback via talking to your child’s teacher, letter, email or phone.
Thank you, Adrianne McAllister
Message from the Board of Trustees
Our next board hui is Monday the 22nd at 5.30pm in the school's staff room. The focus of this meeting will be our school's responsiveness to our Māori and Pasifika tamariki and whānau. We will also be undertaking more planning around our permanent principal appointment process, so if you have ideas to share, or just want to hear what's happening, please come along on Monday evening. Nau mai, haere mai!
Sad news
Over the weekend Allandale School was vandalised by a number of students from Immediate age to primary school age. Some of these students sadly go to Allandale School. They graffitied our amazing skatepark, smashed bottles and tipped rubbish on our new senior deck. The older students attempted to smash a skateboard and break up our wooden spider and light a fire. Last weekend we had a smashed window, food thrown over the senior classroom windows and the school was littered with rubbish.
While on most of these occasions police are called, we can all do things to help keep our school safe from vandalism.
● Walk through the school more regularly on the weekend. Take your whānau for a walk through the school and enjoy the beautiful spaces.
● Call 111 if you see anything that is worrying you and causing concern. Our local Whakatane branch of police are very keen to support our school so please don’t hesitate.
● Supervise your tamariki if they are coming to school.
We have a beautiful school for everyone to enjoy and we need to look after it together.
