Zero Waste at Allandale
Allandale kinds of kids care for the environment so we’re very grateful to have local experts Casey and Vicky from Zero Waste Whakatāne working with our tamariki this week.
Te whakawairākau/composting
Our senior school tamariki are learning all about te whakawairākau/composting which is nature’s recycling factory. They have made their own worm farms and learnt how they can minimise waste at our kura and at home.
Awa (9 years) explained: “I made a worm farm with Riley using tiger worms. Tiger worms are good at composting. They look like normal worms but are a bit smaller and have a bit of orange on them. I learnt that tiger worms don’t like noise and they can’t get out when they’re in the container. They do go up and have food at night when it’s quiet and calm.”
Cruz-siah (10 years) explained that “worms don’t need us….we need worms. Without worms helping to grow plants, we don’t have life.”
Litterless lunchboxes
Our junior school students have been learning about litterless lunchboxes. They have been exploring packaging and alternatives that are good for our planet.
Reusing
Our middle school classes have been learning about reducing waste by reusing items.
